In 1870, Begusarai was established as a sub-division of Munger district. Later, it became a separate district in 1972. Begusarai was named after ‘Begu’ a man of this district who used to look after ‘Sarai’ an old and small market of the region. Begusarai city is governed by Begusarai Municipal Corporation which provides major community services in this district.

Patna High Court looks after overall jurisdiction of Begusarai district. Begusarai has been a full-fledged revenue district since 1972. Begusarai District Judgeship was established on 13th October, 1977. The Judgeship of Begusarai district was inaugurated by the then Hon'ble Mr. Justice S.P. Singh, High Court Patna and Sri Sachida Nand Prasad Sinha was the first District & Sessions Judge of Begusarai. In 1997, a Munsifi sub-division was also established at Manjhaul under Begusarai Judgeship.
